APPLES & HONEY: Traditionally apple slices are dipped into honey and eaten to symbolize wishes of a  sweet year ahead.

GEFILTE FISH: Rosh HaShanah literally means “head of the year” in Hebrew. For this reason in some Jewish communities it is traditional to eat the head of a fish during the Rosh Hashanah holiday meal. Fish is also eaten because it is an ancient symbol of fertility and abundance.

HONEY CAKE: Similar to the apples and honey, honey cake is eaten to express  wishes for a sweet New Year.

 

 

For those of you who are not Jewish, here’s how you say “Happy New Year” to your Jewish friends during Rosh Hashanah: “L’Shana Tova,” which literally means “For a Good Year.”
