Outdoor Fun in Chicago at Navy Pier

Posted on April 13th, 2012

Warm weather is here and Chicago is coming to life. There’s a fresh, sunlit smell in the air and good vibes are everywhere, as are your options for falling in love with this city.

Here’s a few that may pique your interest for this spring:

Enjoy the Architecture

Take an architectural cruise with Shoreline Sightseeing. You’ll launch from right here at Navy Pier, and wind your way down the Chicago River, seeing a bevy of Chicago’s most striking architecture. For $30, docents will disclose the history of the city and its towering buildings, including the Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Building. Shoreline Sightseeing offers cruises available now (click here for more info). Not a fan of being on the water? Head down to the River Walk for a self-guided bike tour and enjoy some of the same architecture on two wheels.

Bike and Roll Chicago

Bike and Roll provides the equipment so you don’t even have to tote it around. They offer bike and skate rentals for an hour, a day, or a week. You can roll around alone on a date with the city, or join one of their guided tours which begin Memorial Day.

Two-Wheel Fun

Segway Experience of Chicago operates two-hour guided tours on the lakefront departing from Navy Pier. Offered seven days a week, these tours run May-October. The tour guides are a wealth of knowledge about Chicago and group sizes are small (less than eight people) so there’s time for questions and conversations along the way!

Pier Park

Come out to Pier Park at Navy Pier for some outdoor fun. You’ve seen the Ferris wheel, but have you ridden the Ferris wheel? Originally built for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition the Ferris wheel, towering 150-feet-high, provides exquisite views of the city and Lake Michigan. The Ferris wheel isn’t the only attraction at Pier Park either. Play 18 holes of miniature golf, take a spin on the carousel or ride the “Wave Swinger,” an old-fashioned thrill ride.

Don’t forget that all-time favorite summer treat: stop inside Navy Pier to grab an ice cream treat to cool down. Pick your favorite from ice cream giants Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen Dazs.

Navy Pier is your starting point to enjoy that warmer weather and sunshine this year.
